5 Inspection Tips for Technicians

  1. Start inspecting belts, tensioners and pulleys around 60,000 miles.
  2. Use a belt wear gauge to check rib depth and profile. Today’s serpentine belts wear more like tire tread so a special tool is needed to identify belt wear.
  3. Listen for noises like squeaks and squeals – they are telltale signs one of the components has surpassed its service life.
  4. Check tensioner and pulley bearings for wear, sticking or notching.
  5. Replace all front-end drive system components together to help avoid slip or misalignment issues from the use of worn components and a partial repair.
