Timing Belt Kits with Water Pump

Replacing components with the timing kit with water pump guarantees durability and performance of the entire transmission system. The engine cooling system stabilises the engine operating temperature by limiting the rise above the expected limits. The coolant is circulated by the water pump, which must ensure the correct flow at each engine speed. Incorrect operation of the water pump can cause significant damage to the engine. For this reason it is extremely important that it is systematically checked. In many applications, the water pump is controlled by the timing belt. Therefore, its control and any replacement during maintenance to timing control system is extremely important.

The elements of the Timing Kit with Water Pump

The major elements that characterize the quality of Dayco water pump are:

  • The bearing: supports the impeller on one side and the pulley on the other side. This element must ensure constant smoothness and withstand the loads generated by the system. It can be a double ball bearing or single ball bearing (impeller side) and a roller bearing (pulley side). The determination of the bearing geometry is made by the engine manufacturer according to the loads generated by the system.
  • The impeller: can be made of synthetic material reinforced with fibreglass, steel or cast iron. The profile of the impeller blades is important, because it must ensure the correct flow and avoid cavitation effects. The design of the impeller is complex as it ensures constant flow of liquid at all engine speeds.
  • The seal: mounted between the impeller and the bearing. The seal must ensure that the liquid is sealed at all operating temperatures and speeds. The aim is to prevent liquid from entering the bearing and compromising the quality of the grease, damaging the pump.
  • The pump body: generally made of plastic or aluminium. The pump body must guarantee the correct stiffness and geometry of the system.

The other elements

The kit contains the following elements:

  • Timing belt
  • Tensioner
  • Idler pulley
  • Accessory kits

The water pump in the kits is an original equipment derivation pump, offering maximum safety and durability as required by manufacturers.

Poly-V / Serpentine Belts

The Poly-V belts are produced for auxiliary transmissions of cars, commercial vehicles, heavy duty vehicles and buses. Service belts control almost all auxiliary systems. They have very important functions controlling the correct operation of

  • The climate control compressor
  • The power steering pump
  • In some cases even the water pump
  • The alternator

The Poly-V belt and the A/C compressor

The Poly-V belt, with a pulley system, powers the air temperature control system compressor. Its task is to compress the coolant gas circulating within the air temperature control system. It is recommended to always keep the service belt in perfect working order, especially in summer. The functioning of the air temperature control system also depends on this.

The Poly-V belt and the power steering pump

The Poly-V belt powers the power steering pump. The latter is present in almost all cars, ensuring smoother and safer driving. A malfunctioning service belt can make the steering system barely manoeuvrable, compromising the safety of all passengers on board.

The Poly-V belt and the water pump
On some types of cars, the service belt operates the water pump, ensuring the circulation of coolant within the cooling circuit. Thanks to the water pump, the engine and its components can remain at an optimal temperature. Without it, the engine would emit very high temperatures, causing malfunctions.

The Poly-V belt and the alternator operation

The main characteristic of the Poly-V belt is that it powers the alternator by recharging the battery that operates:

  • Starting of the engine
  • The dashboard control panel
  • The headlights
  • The electric windows
  • The air temperature control system.

Materials

Dayco Poly-V belts are all made of EPDM (Ethylene-Propylene-Diene-Monomer) and guarantee:

  • Excellent resistance
  • Reliability
  • Silent operation
  • Long service life.

Main features of the Poly-V belts:

  • Highly flexible for use on small diameter pulleys
  • Power transmission also with the back of the service belts, in the case of the “DPK” (Double Poly-V)
  • Resistance to high operating temperatures for longer service life
  • Managing high workloads while maintaining consistently high performance

Poly-V replacement

Replacing the Poly-V belt requires technical equipment and vehicle knowledge typical of technicians or those who know mechanics. Attention must be paid to the correct tension to be applied to the service belt and the correct positioning on the pulleys. In any case, the best is to turn to a trusted mechanical technician. For this type of operation, it remains the best choice.

Ela Poly-V Belts

Ela belts, also known as “stretch” belts,  are specifically designed for 2 to 4 point drives that do not require tensioning. Although these belts may look like standard Poly-V / Poly-V Serpentine belts, they are very different. These specially designed belts have self-tensioning capabilities required by specific original equipment (OE) drives designed for a “stretch” belt. Vehicles that are manufactured with “stretch” belts must replace those belts with “stretch” belts. These belts are not interchangeable with standard constructed belts of the same size.

Ela belts utilize a proprietary EPDM construction that is designed to elongate over the fixed pulley system, and then maintain the required belt tension over the life of the belt. The backbone behind the Ela belt is its specially developed polyamide tensile member, which allows for high elongation required for installation, yet provides the proper tension maintenance properties to transmit the accessory loads demanded for the drive. This belt construction incorporates a wear resistant EPDM rib material, along with a highly elastic EPDM cushion rubber that surrounds the polyamide tensile cord, thus providing the required adhesion and flexibility to maintain lasting performance.

“Stretch” belts have unique installation instructions depending on the OE application. Installation may require a specialized tool for the application or a simple zip tie. Do not attempt to install by prying the belt on the pulleys.

Dismounting and reusing stretch belts is not recommended. A new belt should be installed anytime one is removed.

Tensioners and Pulleys

The increase in engine performance and the continuous increase in accessory components have been considered in the design development and choice of materials, even for rigid components.

The control components for accessory devices, with both fixed and automatic tensioning, must meet the growing needs of the manufacturers:

  • Increasingly reduced workspaces
  • High temperatures
  • Continuous stress
  • Increase in the component replacement interval

It follows that all the elements of the system must meet extremely high quality standards.

The fundamental types of rigid components are:

FIXED TENSIONERS: the final tension on the belt is applied through the correct setting of the tensioner and remains constant over time. The belt tension is therefore determined during installation, in which case we recommend using the Dayco DTM Tensiometer to ensure that the system functions correctly.

AUTOMATIC TENSIONERS: they can be spring or hydraulic. They are dynamic tensioners because once properly installed, they are able to continuously adapt to the operating conditions of the engine and optimize the belt tension according to the different stresses received from the engine, in all operating conditions.

IDLER PULLEYS: they are pulleys with or without support that help the belt circuit, effectively contributing to the restraint of misalignment and noise reduction.

Dayco supplies components of original quality or equivalent to the original for its range.

Friction Wheels

The Dayco friction wheel is a component developed to transmit power from the crankshaft pulley to the water pump pulley.

The main advantage of the friction wheel is the ability to switch on the water pump, via an electromechanical actuator. The actuator, driven by an electronic control unit (through an electrical signal) can activate the water pump by transmitting mechanical power to the belt. When the engine is cold the coolant will not circulate until the engine has reached normal operating temperature because the water pump is switched off: this will warm up the engine more quickly, reduce fuel consumption and keep exhaust pollution within the EURO 5 emission limits.

Additionally, there are fewer mechanical losses during the disconnection phase of the water pump. Faster heating of the passenger compartment can be achieved thus increasing passenger comfort in cold weather. Dayco is the OE supplier of the entire friction wheel system, which includes a water pump pulley, tensioner, Poly-V belt and friction wheel.

Alternator Freewheels

With the increase in the amount of accessories requiring extra electrical power, such as GPS navigation systems and heating and cooling power seats, alternator freewheels are becoming popular on many late model vehicles due to increased alternator loads and engine torsional fluctuations.

Dayco OAPs allow the alternator to ‘freewheel’ when the belt speed drops and are engineered with one-way clutches that allows the rotational inertia of the alternator to “overrun” during any belt deceleration event. Dayco OAPs, which are designed for long service life, decrease drive belt vibration and reduce belt slippage during rapid acceleration or deceleration, resulting in reduced stress on the drive belt and other accessories as well as increased alternator and drive belt life.

Dayco ADPs have one-way clutching capability which allows the ADP to isolate and dampen the drive from the alternator upon deceleration. Similar to Dayco OAPs, ADPs reduce belt slippage during rapid acceleration or deceleration, reduce stress on the drive belt and other accessories and reduce belt noise, all while increasing alternator and belt drive life as well as improving the variation of drive belt tension.
